About the Promotional Materials page:

Here is documentation that PIOs and Amateur Radio organizations can print and use to promote ham radio.  The material described below is locally produced and is free to use provided it is not modified from its original form in any way.  The material in the right hand column are from other sources and must be used within the restrictions referred to on those documents.

“Welcome”

The “Welcome” document was created for North Carolina Volunteer Examination teams to give to individuals who have just passed their exams and have become new ham radio operators.  The congratulatory handout gives them helpful information on what to do next, including reasons for joining the ARRL and their local Amateur Radio organizations.

Welcome document for individuals who’ve just passed their first exam.

“Talk With The Hand”

The “Talk With The Hand” package contains tutorials ranging from the most basic to the advanced and is intended to promote an appreciation for Morse code.  Also included are attractive certificates of proficiency that correspond to the tutorials.  The basic tutorials and proficiency certificates are targeted at kids of all ages, who are not yet ham radio operators, but (like many kids) find Morse code fascinating.

Talk With The Hand tutorial #1 (basic) is an introduction to Morse code that explains its background and usefulness.  At the end is an exercise that has participants using a key to tap out their initials.

Proficiency Certificate #1 is to be awarded for successful completion of the exercise in the basic tutorial #1.

[COMING SOON] Talk With The Hand tutorial #2 (basic) builds on the first tutorial by adding the rest of the alphabet and the numerals between zero and nine.  At the end is an exercise that has participants using a key to tap out the alphabet and the numerals.

Proficiency Certificate #2 is to be awarded for successful completion of the exercise in the basic tutorial #2.

[COMING SOON] Talk With The Hand tutorial #3 (advanced) includes prosigns and prepares participants to complete their first Morse QSO.

Proficiency Certificate #3 is to be awarded for successfully completing a Morse QSO.

[COMING SOON] Talk With The Hand tutorial #4 (advanced) includes explanations of the advantages of both mechanical and electronic keyers.

Proficiency Certificate #4 is to be awarded for code proficiency of 5 words per minute.

Proficiency Certificate #5 is to be awarded for code proficiency of 13 words per minute.

Proficiency Certificate #6 is to be awarded for code proficiency of 20 words per minute.

“Got Ham?”

[COMING SOON] “Got Ham?”  Or is a cell phone, CB radio or FRS radio a better choice for your family's emergency preparedness plan than is Amateur Radio?  Here is a frank, honest comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of each.

“Basic Electricity”

[COMING SOON] The “Basic Electricity” handout lets kids have fun learning some fundamentals about low voltage DC by building a working electromagnet.  From there, they advance to the basics of reading a schematic diagram and using the electromagnet to construct a buzzer.  An unexpected consequence of these experiments makes the jump that brings them to the threshold of “wireless” communication.
